Emergency Communication Systems

The Emergency Text Alert System is used to send alerts in the event of an emergency on the Fort Collins campus. The system is only used during a safety emergency or unexpected closing of the campus, such as a snow day.

Safewalk

Walking home at night? Call Safewalk for a Campus Service Officer (other students employed by CSUPD) to walk you any place within a three-block radius of campus, any day of the week, all year long.

Around Campus

  • Always keep your items of value (backpack, books, phone, purse, computer, keys, and etc.) with you.
  • Always lock your bike to a bike rack.
  • If it is late at night SAFE WALK can walk you to your car, residence hall, or house if it is within the service boundaries.
  • Always be aware of your surroundings. Avoid getting overly involved in handheld electronic devices that may distract your attention.
  • Walk confidently at a steady pace, making eye contact with people.
  • Always be alert of your surroundings. Trust your instincts; avoid people and situations that make you nervous. Stay in well-lit areas as much as possible.

Around Town

  • Don’t use outside ATMs at night, or in unfamiliar or unsafe surroundings.
  • If asked directions by a driver, keep a safe distance from the car.

Home Safety

  • Always lock your doors.
  • Have your windows locked whenever you are not home.
  • When friends drop you off at home or work, ask them to wait until you are safely inside before leaving.
  • Approach with extreme caution any entryway where normal lighting is not functioning.
  • Never open your door to a stranger.
  • Never tell a stranger that you are home alone.
  • Never hide an extra key under a mat, in a flowerpot, or in any other easily accessible place.

Fire Safety

  • In the residence halls please do not burn candle or incense. Do not use any open coil appliances.
  • Remember to turn off the stove and/or oven in any of the resident hall kitchens or if you are cooking in your apartment.
  • Make sure you have a fire extinguisher in your apartment or house.

Residence Hall Safety

  • In the residence halls please do not burn candle or incense. Do not use any open coil appliances.
  • Do not leave your keys in the door knob.
  • Do not leave your door open when the room is unattended. This includes you just going to the bathroom
  • Keep your door closed and locked while you are sleeping.
  • Always keep personal information, access codes, credit cards and other electronic information confidential.
  • Keep items of value that are easy to take out of sight.

Automobile Security

  • Always lock your car.
  • Make sure the windows are rolled up.
  • Do not leave your car running unattended.
  • Do not leave valuable items in your car. If you do, make sure they are not visible.
  • Always have your keys out and ready for use before leaving a building to approach your car.
  • Look around and in your car before entering.
  • Lock your car door immediately after entering the vehicle.
  • Check your surroundings before getting out of your car.
  • If you are involved in an accident, stay in your car until police arrive.
  • Lock your car and take your keys when you get out to pump gas.

Travel

  • Let friends/family/roommate know where you are going and when you plan to be back.
  • Never pick up hitchhikers.

Reporting Suspicious Situations:

Whenever you see, hear or “feel” that something is not right, err on the side of caution and contact the CSU PD! We would rather be proactive than reactive.
